Rahul Gandhi does it again, mocks PM on stage at Chhatron ki goonj event in Indore
Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has once again found himself at the centre of a controversy over a stage act mocking Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
A video from Gandhi’s latest ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ event in Indore on Saturday has gone viral on social media. In the video shared by Congress on X, a person sharing the stage with Gandhi appears to mimic PM Modi and poke fun at his interactions with foreign leaders.
Gandhi can be seen sharing the stage during the act. Several people on social media criticised the episode, questioning the appropriateness of such a performance at an event centred on students and youth.
One user said Rahul Gandhi, as the Leader of Opposition, should not participate in “such caricature things”, calling it immature. Another described the act as a “very poor” one.
“Wow, can’t believe Congress and Rahul Gandhi are resorting to this cheap theatrics!” another user posted.
Some users also criticised Gandhi for being present during the performance. One wrote that the Prime Minister “deserves to be respected”, while another called the act “disgraceful and tasteless”.
The timing of the video also drew comments and jibes, with some users linking it to the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) election results announced on Saturday, in which the Congress-backed National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) failed to win any of the four central-panel posts. The RSS-affiliated ABVP retained three posts, while independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen won the vice-president's post.
The latest controversy comes a little over a month after a similar episode involving Gandhi at a Congress event.
On August 13, Gandhi had taken a swipe at PM Modi’s practice of hugging foreign leaders while speaking at the Rachnatmak Congress national convention in New Delhi. He hugged Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit on stage and said PM Modi appeared to think that such gestures constituted foreign policy.
Dikshit then joked, “You weren't hugging me thinking I was Meloni?” Gandhi replied, “I haven't reached that stage yet,” referring to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The exchange drew laughter from the gathering but triggered a political row, with BJP leaders criticising Gandhi’s remarks. Congress, however, defended him, saying Gandhi had not mentioned Meloni by name.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had then called Gandhi’s remarks “shameful” and “indecent”, arguing that they insulted the Prime Minister and India’s international reputation. The Ministry of External Affairs also said that differences of opinion should be expressed respectfully, while stressing India’s strong ties with Italy.
