Rain coming: Monsoon system to intensify on Tuesday, drench Odisha, Andhra
A developing weather system over the Bay of Bengal is set to intensify further on Tuesday, September 22, bringing heavy to very heavy rainfall to several parts of eastern and central India, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The low-pressure area formed over the north Andaman Sea on September 19 and moved west-northwestwards before becoming a well-marked low-pressure area over the eastcentral and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal on September 21.
The system is expected to continue moving in the same direction and intensify into a depression during the next 24 hours. It is likely to strengthen further into a deep depression over the westcentral and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal during the following 24 hours.
The system is expected to move towards the north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coast and reach near the coast around the morning of September 23.
For September 22, Odisha is likely to receive light to moderate rain at many places, with heavy to very heavy rainfall possible at isolated locations.
Coastal Andhra Pradesh is also expected to receive light to moderate rainfall at most places, with heavy to very heavy rain at isolated locations.
The weather system is expected to strengthen further on September 23 and 24. Odisha could then see heavy to very heavy rainfall at several places, with extremely heavy rainfall possible at isolated locations in south Odisha.

The system is expected to affect several neighbouring states as it moves inland. Telangana could receive heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places on September 22, while Chhattisgarh is likely to experience heavy rain at isolated locations.
Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal are also expected to receive rainfall during the week, with the possibility of heavier spells later.
The IMD has also warned of strengthening winds over the Bay. Wind speeds could reach 50-60 kmph, gusting to 70 kmph, over the central Bay from Tuesday evening.
Along the south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coast, squally winds of 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, are expected from Tuesday morning and could strengthen further on Wednesday.
