Rangayana, Kalaburagi, organised a documentary screening and interaction for college students on Saturday to mark the birth anniversary of theatre personality B.V. Karanth.
Basavaraj Hugar, Joint Director of the Department of Kannada and Culture, inaugurated the programme and said Karanth’s contribution to Indian theatre should be introduced to younger generations.
He stressed the importance of students gaining social awareness along with academic education.
Playwright Mahantesh Navalakal said Karanth had played a major role in taking Kannada theatre to greater heights and had established the importance of the director in theatre. He highlighted Karanth’s contribution to the development of Rangayanas.
Rangayana Director Sujata Jangamshetty said Karanth was an iconic figure in Kannada theatre whose influence extended from the Gubbi Veeranna Theatre Company and Surabhi theatre tradition to the National School of Drama and Rangayana, Mysuru.
She said the Rangayana, Kalaburagi, would organise more programmes in colleges to familiarise students with his life and contribution.
Rangayana artists and staff, theatre personality H.S. Basavaprabhu and others were present.
