MANILA, Philippines — When Marc Saxer went about writing his latest book, Geopolitical Conflict in the Wolf World, the United States under Donald Trump had just announced “liberation day” tariffs. Before he could submit his final draft, the US and Israel launched an attack on Iran, the consequences of which continue to be felt across the world nearly nine months in.

Saxer, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Head of Regional Project Indo-Pacific, writes about the profound transformation in the global order, posits the end of Pax Americana, the return of great power rivalry, and conflicts across the world in his latest book.

He also argues for a future through and beyond this chaos — not based on hope or blind optimism but perhaps faith that humanity will always find its way through, and trust that we and our leaders are wise enough to learn from history.

Saxer sits down for Rappler during a quick Manila stop, his last of several cities since mid-2026, to promote his latest book. Catch the interview on at 5 pm on Thursday, November 5. – Rappler.com
