Renault Duster hybrid will launch on October 17, can do 80% of city driving in electric mode
Renault is set to expand the new Duster range with a strong-hybrid version on October 17. The upcoming SUV will use the company’s E-Tech hybrid system, with Renault claiming that it can run in electric mode for up to 80 per cent of city driving.
The hybrid will become the third powertrain available with the new-generation Duster in India, joining the 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engines. One of the electric motors produces 49hp and drives the wheels, while the other is a 20hp motor-generator.
The hybrid system develops a combined 160bhp and 172Nm. Power is sent to the wheels through an eight-speed dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT).
Renault says the system has been engineered to make extensive use of electric propulsion in urban conditions. The company claims that as much as 80 per cent of city driving can be completed in EV mode, with the petrol engine switching on when additional power or charging is required.How Renault’s hybrid system works
The E-Tech setup differs from the hybrid systems used by the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Victoris and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder. While those models use Toyota’s power-split hybrid architecture with an e-CVT, the Duster uses a multi-mode hybrid transmission with fixed gear ratios.
This allows the Duster to switch between electric propulsion, petrol-engine operation and combined power depending on the driving conditions. The 1.4kWh battery is charged through regenerative braking as well as the engine-driven generator, allowing the SUV to use electric power more frequently during urban driving.

The new-generation Duster was introduced in India earlier in 2026 and is currently available with two turbo-petrol engines.
The entry-level version uses a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 100bhp and 160Nm, paired with a six-speed manual gearbox. The larger 1.3-litre turbo-petrol develops 163bhp and 280Nm and can be specified with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed DCT automatic.

With the hybrid version, Renault will enter a segment that already includes strong-hybrid versions of the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Maruti Suzuki Victoris and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder.
The new Duster is sold in India exclusively with petrol-based powertrains, with Renault having ruled out diesel and all-wheel-drive options for the India-spec SUV. The hybrid therefore adds an efficiency-focused alternative to the existing turbo-petrol versions rather than replacing a diesel option.
The Duster continues with its SUV-focused design, 212mm ground clearance and a 518-litre boot. The cabin gets a 10.1-inch touchscreen, 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control, ventilated front seats, wireless charging and a 360-degree camera.
The Duster E-Tech strong hybrid will be launched in India on October 17.
