'Resident Evil': How director Zach Cregger pays homage to the original games in the new film - GMA Network
While the new "Resident Evil" film is an original story instead of an adaptation, director Zach Cregger still made sure to pay homage to the classic video game franchise.
In creating the environment, Cregger said he was inspired by his own experience of playing the games.
"If you've played the games a ton, you won't be able to help but notice some of the healing spray cans and some of the green herbs," he said in a press release from Columbia Pictures.
Another direct nod to the games is the point of view given to the audience.
"We are locked over Bryan’s shoulder because I'm really interested in honoring that video game language," Cregger said.
"And with the games, you really are perched on the shoulder of someone. So, if Bryan is walking through a corridor, we're mostly behind him. When he looks left, we swing over to see what he's looking at. If he looks right, we kind of swing this way," he added.
Previous teasers also show first person shooter point of views, similar to the original games.
Cregger expressed hopes that fans would go see the film in theaters for the "communal experience."
"Going to see a horror movie in a theatre is a communal experience, and therefore you're tapping into an energy that makes the experience greater than it would be if you're sitting on your couch doing it all by yourself. And to be able to go on that roller coaster ride with a roomful of strangers, it just it makes the ride more fun," he said.
"Resident Evil," starring Austin Abrams, Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser, hits Philippine cinemas on September 16. —JCB, GMA News
