Retired teacher killed in bus accident in Idukki

A 57-year-old retired schoolteacher was killed and her son was seriously injured after a speeding private bus collided with their two-wheeler near Thodupuzha in Idukki. According to the police, the deceased has been identified as M.N. Vijimol, a retired teacher from St. Mary’s Public School, Nagappuzha. The incident occurred on Sunday evening at Madakkathanam on the Thodupuzha–Muvattupuzha route. Vijimol and her son, Anuroop, were on their way to home from Piravom on a two-wheeler when a private bus named ‘Gurudevan’ lost control while attempting to overtake another bus and struck their vehicle.
Both riders were thrown onto the road. Vijimol sustained critical injuries and was admitted to a private hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday morning. Her son remains under medical care. Following confirmation of brain death by doctors, Vijimol’s family consented to donate her corneas, which will restore sight to two individuals. Vijimol is survived by her husband, R. Vinayachandran, a former photographer with Kerala Kaumudi.
Local residents alleged that reckless speeding by private buses has led to recurring accidents in the Thodupuzha area. According to locals, this is the third such mishap in recent times. Meanwhile, Thodupuzha Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) Saji Markose stated that police will conduct special inspections across the region to curb overspeeding by private buses.
