Rotten fruits, stale kebabs found during food inspection in Karnataka's Shivamogga

A food safety inspection team led by Sub-Divisional Magistrate Dr Maitri recovered rotten and fungus-infested fruits, along with stale kebabs allegedly prepared using artificial colouring, during raids at several eateries and juice shops in Karnataka’s Shivamogga district, officials said.

The inspections resulted in the sealing of two outlets of Tanu Juice Centre, while food samples were collected from other establishments for testing.

The inspection team first raided a juice centre, where officials found a large quantity of fruits that had deteriorated and developed fungal growth.

The condition of the produce raised concerns over its suitability for consumption and prompted authorities to take action against the outlet.

Officials also detected kebabs that were allegedly prepared using artificial colouring. The samples were collected for laboratory examination to determine the nature of the ingredients used and whether they violated prescribed food safety standards.

Following the findings, two outlets of Tanu Juice Centre were sealed and directed to remain closed.

The enforcement drive was subsequently extended to non-vegetarian hotels operating in the Dargah Complex area.

During surprise inspections, officials found unhygienic conditions at several establishments, including Hotel Red.

The authorities also seized expired juice bottles from Hotel Malnad, adding to concerns over compliance with basic food safety requirements.

Samples of kebabs, mutton and other food items were collected from the inspected establishments and sent for testing.

The results are expected to help authorities determine whether further action is warranted against the concerned traders and food businesses.

The inspections are part of efforts to ensure that eateries and food outlets comply with safety and hygiene regulations and do not sell food that could pose a risk to consumers.

Traders found violating the prescribed norms have been given 15 days to rectify the deficiencies identified during the inspections.

Authorities have warned that failure to address the violations within the stipulated period could invite disciplinary action.
