The Railway Protection Force (RPF) seized 6 kg of ganja, estimated to be worth ₹3 lakh, and arrested a 19-year-old native of West Bengal at the Thrissur railway station on Friday. The seizure was made by the RPF Crime Intelligence Branch, Thiruvananthapuram, during a special inspection to curb drug trafficking through trains.
The accused, identified as Ashik Sekh of Murshidabad district in West Bengal, was intercepted after he alighted from the general coach of Train No. 12660 (Shalimar–Nagercoil) with a bag. A search of the bag led to the recovery of the contraband.
According to officials, the accused had boarded the train at Bhubaneswar with a general ticket. During questioning, he reportedly told the authorities that he had been instructed to hand over the bag to someone at Aluva and was promised a commission of ₹20,000 for the delivery.
The operation was conducted under the supervision of Jipin A.J., Inspector, Crime Intelligence Branch, following directions from Mohammed Haneefa, Senior Divisional Security Commissioner, RPF, Thiruvananthapuram.
The accused and the seized ganja were handed over to the Railway Police in Thrissur for further legal action. A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The RPF had also seized 37.5 kg of ganja wrapped in jaggery recently. Officials said inspections would be intensified in view of the Deepavali season.
