Rugby club mourns player killed in Gabrielle Court shooting - IOL

A Morningstar Rugby Club player was among two men shot dead in separate incidents at Gabrielle Court in Scottsdene, Kraaifontein, on Monday.

The shootings occurred about 30 minutes apart in the same block of flats, prompting crime activists to call for an end to the killings in the area.

The first victim, a 27-year-old man, suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the head, left arm and lower back. A 20-year-old man was later shot dead in the same block after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds to the head.

Both men were declared dead at the scene by medical personnel.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain F.C Van Wyk confirmed that the motive for the shooting is under investigation with no arrests made as yet.

“Kraaifontein police registered a murder case for investigation following the death of a 27-year-old male on Monday, 21 September 2026, at about 12:05, in C-Block, Gabrielle Court, Scottsdene, Kraaifontein," Van Wyk said.

"Upon members arrival they found the body of the victim with multiple gunshot wounds to his head, left arm and lower back. The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel.

The circumstances surrounding both these incidents are under investigation. The motive for these attacks forms part of the police investigation. No suspects at this stage, the investigation is still ongoing.”

Tributes have been flowing in for Eltino Fortuin also known as Malkak who was a member of the Morningstar Rugby Club who was gunned down in the tragic double murder.

The rugby club took to their social media to extend their condolences of one of their own in a post stating, “It is with great sadness that the Morningstar Rugby Club family says goodbye to one of our own, Eltino “Malkak” Fortuin. Malkak, as he was known at Morningstar, came from Kraaifontein and was 100% an MRC Boy.

He wasn’t just a player, he was part of the MRC family. His love for Morningstar, his teammates and rugby will always be remembered.

Our deepest condolences to the Fortuin family, his friends, teammates and everyone who knew and loved him.

Rest in peace, Malkak. MRC Boy forever. One Club. One Family.”

Gavin Riddles Acting CPF Chairperson and National Chairperson of Community Law&Order Foundation said, “We totally condemn this senseless daily killings and shootings in Kraaifontein. More must be done and enough is enough. This is a murder and double murder too much.”
