SA secures R3.2bn NDB loan for Limpopo bulk water project - EWN

South Africa has entered into a loan agreement worth R3.2 billion with the New Development Bank (NDB) to support a bulk water supply project in Limpopo.   

National Treasury said the loan agreement was to support stage one of the Olifants Management Model Programme (OMMP), which would fast-track water delivery in the largely rural region.   

The programme is a “source-to-tap bulk raw and potable water” infrastructure initiative to provide water to more than 100 communities in the province.   

National Treasury said the financing agreement strengthened the partnership between the South African government and the NDB in advancing the country’s sustainable infrastructure priorities.   

The stage 1 project will address bulk water supply challenges in the Mogalakwena Local Municipality in Limpopo.   

The Finance Department said it would implement a bulk water supply scheme that "abstracts water from the Flag Boshielo Dam on the Olifants River".   

"The scheme will supply bulk raw water to industrial users and feed water treatment works that will provide potable water to communities in the municipality," National Treasury said.   

It added that by expanding access to reliable water supplies, the project was expected to strengthen water security and support economic activity in the area.
