São Paulo City Hall revoked the driver’s license of a taxi driver under investigation for charging an Argentine $5,760 for a $5.76 ride. The taxi used in the incident was also seized.
The incident occurred on September 15, before the match between São Paulo and Boca Juniors in the Copa Sudamericana quarterfinals. After paying for the ride electronically, the fan saw that the amount charged was far higher than the amount quoted by the driver.
Marcos Oliveira de Morais, who was located by the Military Police during a checkpoint, was charged with fraud committed by electronic means and remains free while facing the charges. He told police he believed the amount he received was a "tip" or "donation." The newspaper was unable to identify his defense attorney.
In his statement, the driver said he could not afford to return the money. He offered to pay $192 a month. According to the latest information from police, $2,250 had been refunded.
