SASSA warns grant payments will be suspended for beneficiaries who ignore review notices - IOL
SASSA has warned beneficiaries that failing to comply with grant review notices could result in the suspension of their social grant payments.
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has warned social grant beneficiaries that their payments could be suspended if they fail to respond to official grant review notices and submit the required supporting documents within the stipulated period.
The warning comes as the agency urges beneficiaries to take responsibility for maintaining their eligibility records, updating their personal information and checking the status of their grants instead of waiting for notifications.
SASSA said grant reviews were essential to ensuring that financial assistance reached eligible recipients and to preventing irregular or fraudulent payments.
“Failure to comply with a review notice may result in the suspension of grant payments, in accordance with applicable legislation and procedures,” the agency said.
Beneficiaries who receive notifications requesting them to undergo reviews have been urged not to ignore the notices, as failure to respond could affect their continued access to social assistance.
SASSA has encouraged beneficiaries to check whether their grants are under review rather than relying solely on SMS notifications or other communication from the agency.
Beneficiaries can access the agency's online services by sending a “Hi” WhatsApp message to 082 601 0111.
The service allows beneficiaries to check their grant status and access other services, including eLife Certification and social grant applications, without necessarily visiting a SASSA office.
The agency encouraged beneficiaries to use the service regularly, particularly if they are uncertain about their grant status or whether further action is required.
SASSA said beneficiaries were responsible for responding to review requests and providing the necessary information and supporting documents within the specified period.
“Reviews are an essential part of the Agency's efforts to safeguard the integrity of the social assistance system, ensure that grants are paid to qualifying individuals, and prevent irregular or fraudulent payments,” SASSA said.
The agency has also warned beneficiaries to update their personal details whenever their circumstances change, particularly when they change cellphone numbers.
Other changes that must be reported include marital status, financial circumstances and residential address.
SASSA said accurate contact information was critical to ensuring beneficiaries received important notifications, including review notices and requests for supporting documents.
“Beneficiaries who change their cellphone numbers without updating their details with SASSA risk missing important notifications and may consequently fail to respond to requests requiring their attention,” the agency said.
It added that beneficiaries could avoid such situations by ensuring that the information held in its database remained accurate and up to date.
SASSA reiterated that social grants were provided to eligible individuals in accordance with applicable legislation and eligibility requirements.
The agency said beneficiaries needed to play an active role in maintaining their eligibility records, responding to official requests and informing SASSA of any material changes in their circumstances.
The warning comes as SASSA clarifies changes to the November 2026 social grant payment schedule, which it said were introduced as a once-off arrangement to accommodate operational requirements associated with the upcoming Local Government Elections.
The agency confirmed that older persons' grants would be paid on October 30, disability grants on November 2, and children's grants on November 3.
Beneficiaries whose grants are under review are scheduled to receive their payments on November 5, subject to the outcome of the review process and confirmation of their continued eligibility.
“The Agency emphasises that these adjustments apply only to November 2026 and should not be interpreted as a permanent change to the social grant payment schedule,” SASSA said.
The agency confirmed that payment dates from December 2026 to March 2027 would remain as previously announced, until a new schedule for the 2027/2028 financial year is communicated through its official platforms.
SASSA has urged beneficiaries to rely on its official communication channels for accurate information about payment dates and grant reviews, and to avoid unverified messages or speculation.
