Sawan Barwal eyes bigger achievements after Asian Games marathon silver

“This medal motivates me to work harder and aim for bigger achievements for the country,” Army athlete Sawan Barwal said after winning the silver medal in the Asian Games marathon, describing the result as the culmination of years of hard work, training and sacrifices.

The 28-year-old athlete from Himachal Pradesh clocked 2:11:37 to become the first Indian to win a silver medal in the Asian Games marathon since 1982.

“Winning a medal for India at the Asian Games is a very special moment for me. There have been many years of hard work, training and sacrifices behind this result, and I am happy that it has come together on such a big stage,” Barwal said.

He also acknowledged the support he received during his preparation, including from organisations such as NMDC and Hyderabad Runners Society.

“The support I received during my preparation, including from organisations such as NMDC and NMDC Hyderabad Marathon organisers Hyderabad Runners Society, gave me encouragement at important stages of my journey,” Barwal said.

Before Barwal, Hosur Kukkappa Seetharan had won the bronze medal in the marathon at the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi.
