Seahawks sign rookie running back off Commanders' practice squad - Commanders Wire
One of the Washington Commanders’ preseason standouts is heading elsewhere. NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported on Monday night that the Seattle Seahawks are signing running back Robert Henry Jr. off Washington’s practice squad.
The 5-foot-9, 196-pound Henry began his collegiate career at Jones College at Mississippi, then transferred to the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he played his final three seasons.
Henry rushed for 588 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2023, 706 yards and seven touchdowns in 2024 and 1,045 yards and nine touchdowns in 2025. Henry went undrafted in the 2026 NFL Draft and signed with the Commanders as an undrafted free agent.
Henry had a standout game in Washington’s first preseason game against the Miami Dolphins, but didn’t find the same success in the final two preseason games. After the first preseason game, some believed his speed could help him sneak onto the 53-man roster, but the Commanders kept Jacory Croskey-Merritt, Rachaad White, rookie Kaytron Allen, and Jeremy McNichols, with McNichols beginning the season on injured reserve.
Just last week, the Commanders re-signed veteran running back Austin Ekeler. In his first game in over a year, Ekeler carried the ball four times for 29 yards, the most by any Washington running back in Week 4.
Henry joins a Seahawks roster that signed veteran running back Joe Mixon Jr. on Monday. This comes two days after Seattle placed rookie first-round running back Jadarian Price on injured reserve with a chest injury. Coincidentally, the Commanders picked up their first win of the season with last week's upset victory over the Seahawks.
Henry joins a Seattle backfield that consists of George Holani, Emanuel Wilson and Velus Jones Jr., with Price and Zach Charbonnet also on IR. Seattle initially plans to sign Mixon to its practice squad.
