Sean Payton will have 'some suggestions' and 'some mandates' for Davis Webb - Broncos Wire

When the Denver Broncos face the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football in Week 1, it will mark the regular-season debut of new offensive coordinator and play-caller Davis Webb.

Broncos head coach Sean Payton, who has handled play-calling duties for most of his career, promoted Webb from quarterbacks coach to OC this offseason, handing over the play-calling role in the process.

Payton is an extremely hands-on coach, and he takes pride in his offense — and his perfect plays. So it will be fascinating to see if Webb has any level of a hot seat in 2026. If things don't go well initially, will Payton take back play-calling? If Payton doesn't like a call in Week 1, will he overrule Webb?

Earlier this summer, Payton was asked if he'll make suggestions to Webb.

“Yes," Payton said. "Some suggestions, some mandates. It’ll work fine.”

Payton said "mandates" with a smile, and he has said he'll have a "healthy" dynamic with Webb on the sideline.

As for Webb, he's not worried about the possibility of Payton looking over his shoulder. In fact, he's eager to learn from one of the game's best.

"[T]hat was one reason why I wanted to be here was with Sean here," Webb said. "I trust him; he trusts me. We think very similar. I know how he wants the game to be played. It’s the same offense for the most part, just little tweaks here and there, but this is a Sean Payton-coached football team, a Sean Payton offensive philosophy, and we’re just going to grow ... The most attractive thing was leaning on Sean, being in game plan meetings with him, using his experience. I think that’s going to benefit a young play caller."

Payton and Webb appear to have a great relationship and a good plan for their game-day dymanic going into the season. We'll see how it holds up once the games begin.
