Security tightened in Metro Manila ahead of September 21 rallies
MANILA, Philippines — Police units in Metro Manila have heightened security preparations in anticipation of rallies on Sept. 21, which marks the 54th anniversary of the declaration of martial law.
To prevent a repeat of the violence which marred rallies last year, Philippine National Police chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. has ordered PNP commanders to intensify intelligence monitoring for security threats and to mobilize personnel and resources in areas where the rallies are going to be held.
“There should be a sufficient number of policemen in all protest sites and ensure the safety and security of everybody, including the protesters themselves,” Nartatez said in a statement.
Brig. Gen. Christopher Abrahano, National Capital Region Police Office director, said more than 15,000 police officers will be deployed for rallies on Sept. 21.
Last year’s protests turned violent after masked men attacked police officers protecting areas surrounding Malacañang Palace.
Apart from securing rally permits, Nartatez reminded demonstrators to hold their activities peacefully and in accordance with laws.
