The University of Toronto issued a shelter-in-place order Monday night for its Mississauga campus after reports of police activity at a student residence hall.
Peel police say a situation involving reports of gunfire at the University of Toronto Mississauga campus is contained after the school issued a shelter-in-place order Monday night.
The university issued the alert around 9:30 p.m. after receiving reports of police activity at McLuhan Court residence, located at 3330 Residence Road.
Peel police said the “situation is contained” in a social media post around 11 p.m. regarding an active incident in the area of Mississauga Road and Outer Circle near the university.
“Peel Regional Police have confirmed shots fired in the area of 3330 Residence Road, McLuhan Court Residence at UTM. Police have secured the surrounding area,” read an updated alert from UofT. The alert asks campus community members to shelter in place if on campus and stay away if not.
Peel police say they responded to a call about the situation at 9:11 p.m. and said a large police presence remains in the area.
A media officer is headed to the scene, and more information will be provided as they have it, Peel police added in the social media post.
Peel paramedics told the Star they are on standby.
“We don’t have any patients; we are not providing any care or anything, but it’s still a police matter. They do have us staged just in case,” a Peel paramedics spokesperson said.
