‘Showtime best thing for local flag footballers’ - Punch Newspapers
Abia Warriors wide receiver and Team Nigeria flag football player Remilekun Bello described the Showtime Flag Football League as the best thing to happen to athletes competing in the sport locally. Bello, a back-to-back Showtime champion, said the league created opportunities for players through contracts, improved welfare and professional competition. “Showtime is the best thing that has happened to athletes playing in our local flag football league. It has given us a platform to compete, develop and be recognised for what we do,” Bello said. The player particularly highlighted the league’s contract system, saying it gives athletes a greater voice in discussions over their payment and welfare. “As a player, you have a voice. You can tell the team what you believe is good for you in terms of payment and welfare, and both sides can reach an agreement. Bello enters Season XV as one of the established players in the competition, having won consecutive championships with Abia Warriors before Lagos Knights ended their title reign in the Season XIV final. The new season comes with a ₦60m reward commitment, including ₦15m for the Showtime Bowl champions, ₦6m for the runners-up, ₦5m for the regular-season champion and ₦4m for the 5v5 Cup winner. Bello also praised the organisers for the growth of the competition. “I have to give credit to the organisers for what they are doing.
