Shree Charani is on the cusp of a historic milestone in the ICC Women’s T20I Player Rankings after a stellar campaign at the Women’s Asia Cup helped the India spinner strengthen her position among the world’s elite.

The young left-arm spinner has now moved within touching distance of Australia’s Megan Schutt, who holds the record for the highest rating points achieved by a bowler in the women’s T20I rankings. Schutt reached 806 points in November 2018, meaning Charani is just two points away from matching the Australian’s mark.

Charani has become the first Indian to cross the 800-point mark in the ICC Women’s T20I rankings after her impressive performances in the tournament. Her latest rating of 804 points is also the highest rating points ever achieved by an Indian in the ICC Women’s T20I Player Rankings, across both batters and bowlers.

England’s Sophie Ecclestone is the other bowler to have breached the 800-point barrier, having reached 802 points in the rankings. Charani, therefore, has an opportunity to join an exclusive club while also potentially becoming the highest-rated bowler in women’s T20I history.

Charani’s rise has also seen her surpass a record that had stood for 15 years. Before the spinner’s surge, Mithali Raj held the record for the highest rating points achieved by an Indian in the ICC Women’s T20I rankings.

The former India captain had reached 780 points in the batting rankings in 2011. Charani’s 804 points have now taken the record into a new bracket, underlining the scale of her rise on the international stage.

The 22-year-old was one of India’s key performers during the Women’s Asia Cup, finishing the tournament with 12 wickets. She saved one of her most important performances for the final against Sri Lanka, returning figures of 4/20 as India clinched the title.

Charani’s rise has been particularly rapid given her limited experience at the international level. She first broke into the top position in the T20I bowling rankings earlier in 2026 and has continued to build on that momentum.

Her Asia Cup performances have now put her just two rating points away from Schutt’s all-time benchmark. A strong run in the Asian Games could see Charani rewrite the record books once again and become the highest-rated bowler in the history of the ICC Women’s T20I rankings.- EndsPublished By: sabyasachi chowdhuryPublished On: Sep 16, 2026 11:00 IST
