Shubman Gill 223 powers India's record 406 chase in Guwahati run-fest: Stat pack
Captain Shubman Gill's unbeaten 223 off 133 balls powered India to 406/2 in 43.3 overs as the hosts completed the second-highest successful chase in men's ODI history against the West Indies in Guwahati on Wednesday. India's eight-wicket win came with 39 balls to spare after West Indies posted 405/7, their highest ODI total.
Gill reached his double hundred in 117 balls, making it the fastest 200 in ODI cricket. His 223* is the third-highest individual score in men's ODIs, behind Rohit Sharma's 264 and Martin Guptill's 237*, while he became only the second batter after Rohit to score multiple ODI double hundreds.
Rohit Sharma made 101 off 75 balls and shared a 255-run opening stand with Gill. The partnership gave India the platform to chase 406, with the two batters putting on more than half of India's required runs before Rohit departed. The 811 runs scored across the two innings made this the third-highest aggregate in an ODI. West Indies' 405/7 was the second-highest total ever to be chased successfully in men's ODIs and only the second 400-plus ODI total to end in defeat.
West Indies also produced three individual centurions, with John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo all reaching three figures. It was only the sixth time in men's ODI history that a team had three batters score hundreds in the same innings.
Gill's 223* also took his tally to 333 runs across his last two ODI innings, following his 110 against West Indies in the first ODI. That is the second-highest aggregate by a batter across two consecutive ODI innings, behind Martin Guptill's 342 in 2015.
