Sibiya will remain at the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Facility over sexual offences case
Embattled deputy national police commissioner Shadrack Sibiya will remain behind bars at the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Facility.
The senior officer is accused of sexual offences and will return to the dock next Tuesday for a formal bail application.
Sibiya made his first appearance in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
He faces five charges, including rape, two counts of sexually grooming, promoting the sexual grooming of a child, and trafficking in persons.
The senior police officer is accused of sexually grooming the 16-year-old daughter of someone close to him.
The charge sheet states Sibiya's associate placed his daughter in contact with the senior cop to discuss logistics and transport arrangements.
However, the senior police officer allegedly started sending the girl explicit photos and later raped her 18-year-old friend at a hotel in Sandton.
NPA Spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said that the state will oppose bail.
"The bail application will happen on the 29th of September. Our prosecutor was very clear that they’re are opposing bail on the basis on the information that they have put before court."
The media was not allowed to enter the courtroom despite the defence not making an application to bar the media coverage proceedings.
