A day after the Assam Police drew flak for the “encounter” death of a 34-year-old man accused of killing five people in a Guwahati hotel on October 26, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa emphasised the decline in the State’s crime rate.
Taking to social media on Thursday (November 5, 2026), Mr. Sarma cited government figures to claim “investigations are moving faster, conviction rates are climbing, and crime rates are heading for the exit”.
He posted a series of graphics, saying Assam’s crime rate declined by almost 68% from 379 per lakh population in 2021 to 121.5 in 2025. The chargesheet filing rate jumped from 48.8% in 2016 to 87.66% in 2019.
Another graphic showed the conviction rate had increased from 5.5% in 2020 to 30.88% by September 2026.
“A stronger conviction rate is reflecting a significant shift in case outcomes,” the Chief Minister said.
