SIT to probe violence at Kolkata’s SRFTI, first report on October 1

The West Bengal Government on Wednesday (September 30, 2026) constituted a Special Intensive Team (SIT) to probe the violence at the campus of Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute on September 27. The six -member investigation team is headed by Kunal Agrawal, Additional Commissioner of Kolkata Police (Crime).

The first report of the SIT will be submitted by October 1, the State government said in a notification. Kolkata police have registered three First Information Reports (FIRs) in connection with the violence at SRFTI. While one FIR was registered on the basis of a complaint filed by Sukanta Majumder, Dean-Film, SRFTI, the other was based on a complaint filed by Anjan Sinha, provincial head of the ABGP, West Bengal chapter. The third FIR was registered on a complaint by Koushick Bose, Additional Officer-in-Charge, Panchasayar police station.

Violence erupted at the campus of SRFTI on September 27 as member of Akhil Bharatiya Grahak Panchayat (ABGP) a right wing consumer group, who were holding an event inside the campus clashed with students of institute. Several students were injured in the violence. The students of SRFTI have raised questioned as to how an organisation that has nothing to do with cinema and film making was allowed to hold an event inside the main auditorium of the campus.

The ABGP members said that they had booked auditorium inside the university on payment of a fees and the students disrupted their proceedings mid-way and tore up posters at the venue. Both the sides have blamed each other for the violence.

The Bharatiya Janata Party leadership, including some ministers of the State government have blamed the students for the violence and have dubbed the students protesting against the event as Dimagi Naxal.
