So irrational: Kangana Ranaut defends BJP MLA Maithili Thakur over Rolls-Royce row
Actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut stepped in to defend playback singer and Bihar MLA Maithili Thakur after she was trolled online over her recent Rolls-Royce appearance. Maithili was recently seen arriving at Mumbai’s Lalbaugcha Raja in a blue Rolls-Royce Cullinan, and the luxury car quickly became a talking point on social media. Some users questioned how the young politician could be seen in such an expensive vehicle so soon after entering politics.
Kangana, however, doesn’t think being a politician means giving up a comfortable life. Sharing her thoughts on Instagram Stories, she questioned why public representatives should be expected to remain “poor and lifeless” simply because they’ve chosen public service.
“Some people a**** start to burn whenever they see politicians living a good life (sic),” Kangana wrote in a Story shared on Sunday. She added that politicians can have their own careers, lives and popularity while also working for the public, adding, “We are not even interested in public money but to expect us to remain poor and lifeless is so irrational,” she said. “Why can’t we also live well?”
The controversy began after Maithili’s visit to Lalbaugcha Raja in Mumbai. Videos of her arrival in the luxury SUV went viral, prompting plenty of discussion online. Some users questioned the ownership of the car and its cost. Reports have also pointed out that the Rolls-Royce seen with Maithili is not confirmed to be owned by her.
The debate has also brought attention back to Maithili’s relatively recent move from music to politics. She joined the BJP ahead of the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections and contested the Alinagar seat. She won with 84,915 votes, defeating RJD’s Binod Mishra by 11,730 votes, and became the youngest member of the new Bihar Assembly.
But Maithili was already well known long before she entered electoral politics. A trained classical and folk singer, she built a following through her performances in Maithili and Bhojpuri, as well as devotional and other songs.
