Sokoto IDP Camp: Obi raises alarm over 10 people sharing one room

Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has raised the alarm over the harsh conditions at the Ramin Kura Internally Displaced Persons camp in Sokoto State.

Obi said as many as 10 displaced Nigerians are crammed into a single room at the camp, which houses more than 1,000 people.

He disclosed this on Wedneesday via his X-handle after visiting the camp as part of his two-day engagement in Sokoto State.

Obi said many residents were living in makeshift shelters and thatched rooms.

He also observed that the camp lacked adequate toilets, a primary healthcare centre and a basic school for children.

The 2027 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Development Party said the conditions showed the urgent need for government intervention.

“I have always insisted that as long as even one Nigerian lives in an IDP camp, we are all internally displaced,” he said.

Obi urged the Federal Government to address the immediate needs of the displaced persons while tackling the insecurity that forced them from their communities.

He said the ultimate goal should be to restore security and enable the displaced Nigerians to return safely to their ancestral homes.

The former governor said the Sokoto visit marked his 12th visit to an IDP camp across Nigeria.

He pledged to continue supporting displaced Nigerians, saying their plight should remain a national concern. Obi also renewed his call for the President and other political office holders to spend their holidays within Nigeria.

He said doing so would expose them directly to the hardship faced by vulnerable Nigerians.

Before visiting the camp, Obi held consultations with groups across Sokoto on insecurity, out-of-school children, poverty, youth unemployment and drug abuse.

He called on the government and relevant agencies to urgently intervene in the Ramin Kura camp.
