Some residents say Tshelimnyama is no longer safe after damaging mudslide - EWN

Some residents in Tshelimnyama, Durban, said the area is no longer safe, following a mudslide that swept away three houses.

The mudslide occurred on Friday, also damaging two cars.

No fatalities or injuries were reported, as the people living in the affected houses had evacuated before disaster struck.

Tshelimnyama resident Nduduzo Mdletshe said he fears what would’ve happened if he didn’t wake up in the middle of the night and evacuated his family before their home was swept away by the mudslides.

Another resident, Ntando Shoba, also survived the mudslides; however, her home didn’t.

Shoba said she’s scared to rebuild in Tshelimnyama, as the area always gets hit the hardest when there’s heavy rains.

“We would like to rebuild in another place because this area is very susceptible to mudslides. It’s not the first time we have had them here. As you can see, this sand is very weak.”

While the level six weather warning was only for Thursday and Friday, disaster management teams are still urging residents in flood prone areas to continue to be vigilant.
