A Spanish second-tier match between Tenerife and Andorra was abandoned deep into stoppage time after a player sustained a serious head injury.
The contest ticked past the 90th minute with the score at 2-2, with Andorra completing a late comeback from two goals down to level in the closing stages.
But in the seventh of eight minutes added on, Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel suffered a sickening blow to the head from Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono.
Owono charged towards the centre circle to clear a long ball and appeared to knee De Miguel in the head, knocking him out.
Owono was shown a straight red card for his challenge - the third of the match - as Andorra went down to nine men.
As medical staff treated De Miguel, players from both sides watched on in distress, with several of his team-mates in tears.
The decision was then made by the referee to suspend the game, rather than play out the final minute or blow for full-time.
Tenerife posted on X: “The #TenerifeAndorra match has been suspended due to medical reasons involving Jesss de Miguel. Our best wishes and full support.”
De Miguel was rushed to hospital by ambulance for an emergency evaluation. Spanish media reported he had entered cardiorespiratory arrest but his club has confirmed that his condition is stable.
“CD Tenerife player Jesus de Miguel is admitted to the ICU at the University Hospital of Nuestra Señora de Candelaria, stable despite the severity of his condition,” a club statement read. “The medical services at said hospital will be present and will report when there are updates.”
A statement from Andorra read: “From FC Andorra, we want to send all our strength and best wishes to Jesus de Miguel after the serious incident suffered during today's match. We hope he recovers soon. A very strong hug to the player, his family, and CD Tenerife.”
The Segunda Division fixture experienced a chaotic climax as Tenerife surrendered the 2-0 lead built in the first half through goals from Christian Gomis and Enric Gallego.
Andorra’s Lautaro De Leon scored a penalty in the 83rd minute to halve the deficit, only to be sent off immediately after converting from the spot as he collided with Tenerife goalkeeper Dani Martin while going to collect the ball.
Martin was then shown a yellow and a red in quick succession to cancel out Tenerife’s man advantage within two minutes, moments before Andorra found an equaliser through Stefan Golubovic.
The game was abandoned with the score level after Owono’s dismissal, with Tenerife remaining four points ahead of relegation-threatened Andorra in the table.
