SPCA issued warnings to dog owner before Long Street arrest - IOL
The suspect was arrested by Law Enforcement.
The owner of three dogs seized from filthy conditions in Cape Townβs Long Street had previously been warned by the SPCA over the welfare of his animals.
The dogs were seized on Friday September 18, 2026 after the man was arrested for allegedly setting one of them on City of Cape Town Law Enforcement officers.
According to the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, its inspectors had dealt with the owner before and issued warnings about the conditions in which the animals were being kept.
Two of the dogs seized by the Cape of Good Hope SPCA after allegedly being found tied up in Long Street, Cape Town.
But inspectors struggled to follow up because the man would leave the area with the dogs and later return.
On Friday, Law Enforcement officers responding to complaints found him with three dogs at a vehicle parked in Long Street.
One dog was tethered outside while two were inside the vehicle with him.
The SPCA said the vehicle was extremely filthy, had a strong odour and did not have enough space for the animals. It was believed the man had been living in the vehicle with the dogs.
The man allegedly became obstructive while Law Enforcement officers were dealing with him and untied one of the dogs despite being told not to.
The SPCA said officers reported that he then set the dog on them.
He was arrested and the SPCA was called to the scene.
A SPCA inspector raised concerns after he came across the conditions the dogs were living in.
The SPCA added criminal charges relating to animal cruelty.
Inspector Lwazi Ntungele assessed the dogs and seized all three, which were taken into the SPCAβs care.
The SPCA said the earlier warnings had not improved the conditions in which the dogs were being kept.
Criminal charges relating to animal cruelty have now been added in terms of the Animals Protection Act.
The three dogs remain in the SPCAβs care.
