Speeding SUV loses control, plunges 25 feet from Indore flyover; 4 injured
There was panic among locals in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore after a horrific road accident unfolded in the early hours of Saturday when a speeding black Thar carrying two men and two women crashed through the steel railing of a flyover in the Rajendra Nagar area. Police said that the automobile plunged around 20 to 25 feet onto the road below.
All four occupants were seriously injured and were rushed to a nearby private hospital for treatment. Hospital authorities have reportedly told police that the injured are out of danger.
The accident occurred between 3 am and 4 am on September 12. According to preliminary information, the four occupants were travelling in the Thar after returning from a party.
The vehicle was reportedly coming from the Chanakyapuri side and was moving onto the flyover when the driver apparently lost control. The SUV veered towards the edge, smashed through the steel fence and fell onto the road below, police said.
"An accident has taken place in Rajinder Nagar area where a black car was coming from Chanakyapuri and as it drove onto the flyover, it lost balance, broke off the steel fence and fell some 20–25 feet below between 3 and 4 am on September 12. The four occupants of the car – two men and two women – were rushed to the hospital," Rajesh Dandotiya, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police told media.The impact left the Thar badly damaged and triggered panic in the surrounding area. People who heard the crash rushed to the spot and joined police personnel in rescuing the occupants from the wrecked vehicle.
The four injured persons were subsequently taken to a private hospital.
Police have seized the damaged SUV and begun examining the circumstances surrounding the crash. Preliminary possibilities include excessive speed or the driver losing control of the vehicle, ADCP Dandotiya added.
Reports have also raised the possibility that the occupants may have been under the influence of alcohol, although police said this has not yet been established.
"All four injured are out of danger, is what we are being told by hospital authorities. We will only be able to say anything for certain after an interrogation of those involved. Whether they were drunk or not will be known only after their medical reports are available," he added.
Police are now preparing to record statements of the injured once their condition permits and examine CCTV footage from the flyover and nearby areas.
