Sports City, IT park, CCTV camera network among projects for Kalyana Karnataka: CM

Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced several initiatives focusing on investment, employment, healthcare, urban infrastructure, tourism, and sports for the Kalyana Karnataka region, as he participated in the 79th Kalyana Karnataka Utsav in Kalaburagi on September 17.

Kalyana Karnataka Liberation Day is observed on September 17 every year to commemorate the end of the Nizam’s rule, and the region’s integration with the Indian Union in 1948.

Mr. Shivakumar first paid a floral tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel at Timmapur Circle, hoisted the national flag at the Police Parade Ground before addressing the gathering.

The Chief Minister announced the establishment of the Kalyana Karnataka Economy Mission (KKEM) as a Section 8 company to attract investment and accelerate industrial development in the region. A Bio Economy Mission will be established to promote processing and value addition of agricultural produce, with focus on tur dal, Kamalapur banana, raisins, and millets.

Announcing a special two-year campaign against anaemia, Mr. Shivakumar said the programme would focus on screening, prevention, and treatment, particularly among pregnant women, adolescents, and lactating mothers.

For Kalaburagi city, he announced a 30-acre IT park and the establishment of KRIYA (Kalaburagi Research, Innovation and Youth Accelerator) to promote innovation, start-ups, and young entrepreneurs.

“An AI-based CCTV camera network will be introduced in Kalaburagi city and taluk headquarters for public safety, crime prevention and traffic management, besides monitoring civic services, such as waste management,” he said.

The Chief Minister announced that a flyover will be constructed on the ring road along Sedam Road to ease traffic congestion. 

“A new peripheral ring road is being planned. A detailed project report is under preparation. A new lake and recreational park will be developed in the city at a cost of ₹30 crore,” he said.

Underlining the importance of tourism development in the region, the Chief Minister said that the State Government would develop a pilgrimage circuit connecting Bahmani fort, Sharanabasaveshwar temple, Khwaja Bande Nawaz dargah and Buddha Vihar in Kalaburagi, Rashtrakuta fgort in Malkhed, Sannati Buddhist site in Chittapur, and Dattareya temple in Ganagapur. 

“Ganagapur will be developed in the first phase at a cost of ₹50 crore. A vachana mantapa (hall for poems) will be established in Kalaburagi to promote the teachings and vachana tradition of Basavanna among the younger generation,” he said.

In the sports sector, Mr. Shivakumar announced the comprehensive redevelopment of Chandrashekhar Patil Stadium in Kalaburagi over the next two years. 

“The government will enter into an agreement with the Karnataka State Cricket Association to develop cricket facilities benefiting the entire Kalyana Karnataka region. A ‘Sports City’ will be established at Hadgil Haruti village in Kalaburagi taluk, with indoor and outdoor facilities for various sports,” he said.

He announced a ‘Koti Vriksha’ campaign across Kalyana Karnataka over the next two years, with a target of planting and nurturing one crore saplings.

On water resources, Mr. Shivakumar said the government had decided to construct a balancing reservoir for the Tungabhadra dam at Navali in Koppal district. 

“The decision is taken following discussions involving Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana under the leadership of Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil,” he said.

Highlighting the development initiatives in the region, the Chief Minister said about ₹25,000 crore had been provided as special grants to Kalyana Karnataka over the past 12 years. “₹14,000 crore of the allocation had already been spent, with 41,103 projects taken up, and 32,985 completed, while 8,118 were in progress,” he said.

He said 79,383 young people from the region had secured employment through initiatives linked to Article 371(J).

“We have initiated the process for recruiting for around 72,000 government posts, of which 32,000 posts would be available to candidates from Kalyana Karnataka,” he said.

Mr. Shivakumar said the government was developing Kalyana Karnataka as a healthcare hub, with super-speciality hospitals planned in Yadgir, Koppal, and Bidar. He said ₹423 crore was being spent on strengthening facilities, including services of the Indira Gandhi Mother and Child Hospital, Kidwai, and Jayadeva hospitals, in the region.

The Chief Minister said the government was implementing the Kalyana Path programme to improve rural roads, with ₹1,000 crore allocated for 1,150 km of roads across the 38 Assembly constituencies in the region.
