Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] State secretary M.V. Govindan said here on Saturday that former IPS officer R. Sreelekha’s “resignation as a Thiruvananthapuram Corporation councillor exposed growing problems within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)”.
Mr. Govindan said some people enter politics with expectations of personal benefits and may not remain in active politics for long. He cited Ms. Sreelekha’s “resignation” as an example.
He said her decision did not appear to mark a complete withdrawal from politics and attributed it to internal differences within the BJP. Mr. Govindan said he saw no other political issue behind the move, but pointed out that the developments could lead to an administrative crisis.
Left Democratic Front (LDF) convener T.P. Ramakrishnan also said the “resignation exposed differences within the BJP.” He alleged that the party would not be able to remain in power in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation and said the issue had emerged from within the BJP itself.
Ms. Sreelekha had earlier differed with the party leadership after not being considered for the Mayor’s post.
Mr. Ramakrishnan said the LDF and CPI(M) in Thiruvananthapuram would take a clear position on the issue.
