Mysuru railway station, one of the historic railway stations in the State, on Wednesday celebrated Station Mahotsav-2026, highlighting its rich railway heritage, historical significance and ongoing modernisation.

The celebrations recalled the contribution of the Mysore Maharajas to the development of railway connectivity through the Mysore State Railway (MSR). The 24.4-km Mysuru–Nanjangud railway line, built at a cost of ₹6.02 lakh, was opened for traffic in December 1891.

Subsequently, MSR became part of Southern Railway on April 14, 1951, while Mysuru Division became part of South Western Railway in 2003. The Mysuru–Bengaluru railway line was converted into broad gauge and commissioned on April 16, 1993, according to Girish Dharmaraj Kalagonda, Divisional Commercial Manager, Mysuru division.

The programme was presided over by Additional Divisional Railway Manager (ADRM), Mysuru division, Shammas Hameed. Railway branch officers and staff, retired employees, members of the Divisional and Zonal Railway Users’ Consultative Committees (DRUCC and ZRUCC), Scouts and Guides, students and staff of Lalitha School, and members of the public participated.

Mr. Hameed felicitated distinguished guests, including retired railway employee Subboji Rao and Mysuru-based International Chess Grandmaster M.S. Tej Kumar. He spoke about the station’s historical significance, heritage architecture and ongoing development initiatives.

Students of Lalitha School and railway staff presented cultural programmes, followed by distribution of prizes to participants.

“The event aimed to celebrate the legacy of Indian Railways, honour the contributions of railway employees and showcase the transformation of railway stations into modern, safe and passenger-friendly facilities,” said Mr. Kalagonda.
