Staying together can lose curiosity: Abhishek Banerjee on long-term relationships

Actor Abhishek Banerjee believes that while communication is key to a healthy relationship, knowing when to step back and give each other space is equally important. Speaking exclusively to India Today, the actor opened up about long-term relationships and why spending every waking moment together can sometimes take away the curiosity and mystery between partners.

Talking about the same, he said, “You know everything about each other, but somewhere down the line, as individuals, you’re also going out into the world and learning things through work, travel, and different experiences. I think partners should be allowed to travel solo sometimes because there are certain lessons you’re supposed to learn alone. Some distance is important. I don’t really believe in staying together all the time because you can lose the curiosity and the mystery.”

The actor stressed that the need for space itself should be communicated openly rather than becoming a source of misunderstanding. “Even that should be communicated. You should be able to tell your partner, ‘I like this space,’ or, ‘When I’m doing this, I don’t like being called many times.’ Similarly, you understand when your partner needs their space.”

He added, “You also don’t always need to show care by constantly asking someone, ‘Have you eaten?’ There are little things you do in a relationship. You come home and see that the fridge is filled with things you like. That, too, is a kind of silent communication. There are different ways of communicating in a relationship.”

Having said that, the Stree actor was asked whether a lack of communication can break a relationship. Abhishek replied, “Totally. I think communication is the main pillar of any relationship. The complications begin when you stop talking, especially in a long-term relationship.”

He explained that while partners may know each other extremely well, they continue to evolve as individuals through their own experiences outside the relationship.
