Youth protests across Germany demanding the government increase education budgets, reduce living costs, and abolish conscription have escalated into violence in several cities, especially Frankfurt, where rioters looted shops, vandalized property, and clashed with police. Authorities have warned that extremist groups might exploit the situation to create chaos.

Riots and shoplifting occurred in Frankfurt, Germany's financial center, on Saturday night (31 Oct) following youth protests organized by the Gen Z group simultaneously in 34 cities nationwide, including Berlin, Munich, and Hamburg. Tens of thousands participated, calling for increased education funding, addressing living costs, and opposing mandatory military service.

The protests were organized by the movement called "Gen Z regelt," meaning "Gen Z takes control." The daytime demonstrations were mostly peaceful, but tensions escalated in the evening when masked individuals looted at least two shops in Frankfurt and smashed windows of several others.

Frankfurt police reported via X that the riots continued, with perpetrators throwing Molotov cocktails at emergency personnel and warned citizens to avoid the city center. Additionally, reports indicated a gun shop window was smashed, and police seized two firearms after arresting a suspect, with many others detained.

Besides Frankfurt, violence also occurred in Berlin, Cologne, and Hamburg, where police used high-pressure water cannons to disperse protesters who threw fireworks, stones, and bottles at officers. In Hamburg, barricades were set on fire on the streets.

Germany's Federal Ministry of the Interior stated that far-left extremists and groups linked to foreign radical movements attempted to join the protests to escalate violence.

Hesse's Interior Minister, Roma Pocek, whose state includes Frankfurt, condemned the incidents, noting that about 100 far-left extremists infiltrated the protests and emphasized that Germany should not repeat the riots seen in France.

Lena Friedrich, spokesperson for Gen Z regelt, said during the Berlin protest that young people are demanding peace and freedom, not war and coercion. She affirmed their call for greater government support for public health and education and a fairer distribution of national defense responsibilities.

The Ministry of the Interior estimated that about 18,000 people participated in protests across Frankfurt, Munich, and Berlin combined, far below the organizers’ initial estimate of approximately 36,000 and the previously announced target of 182,000.

Ahead of the protests, many shops in major cities, especially luxury stores along Berlin’s Kurfürstendamm, boarded up windows and planned early closures due to fears of violence. Authorities increased security measures during the Halloween period and warned that extremists might exploit the youth movement to instigate unrest.

These protests reflect youth dissatisfaction with Germany’s economic challenges, including sluggish growth and pressures on pensions and public services caused by an aging population and declining workforce.

However, questions remain about the role of political groups and civil society organizations involved, raising doubts whether the protests are genuinely youth-led. Germany’s national student organization distanced itself from the movement and plans its own protest on 20 November.

The protests in Germany coincide with youth movements in several European countries, notably Serbia and France. France’s demonstrations last Saturday involved about 320,000 participants nationwide and also saw clashes and looting in multiple cities.
