A street food vendor has gone viral on social media after a video showed him adding a 100-gram slab of “butter” to a plate of kadhi chawal.

The short clip of the vendor, recorded by a food blogger, has garnered 519.5K views after it was shared by X user Sachya.

As seen in the clip, the vendor first served jeera rice on a plate before placing the large slab of what he described was butter on top of it. He then poured kadhi over the rice, added raw onions on the side and finished the dish with a sprinkling of masala.

The vendor told the food blogger that people enjoy the dish, which he sells for Rs 130 per plate. At the time the video was being shot, five plates had already been prepared for customers.

Sachya, meanwhile, joked in the caption of the post that medical insurance had given some people the confidence to eat as though their hospital bills were already covered.

“Medical insurance really gave some people the confidence to eat like tomorrow’s hospital bill is already covered. 100g butter dumped on a single plate kadhi chawal. That’s not a meal, that’s a health insurance claim waiting to happen,” the caption read.

Meanwhile, the amount of "butter," of course, prompted plenty of reactions, with a user joking that their “arteries were shouting for help.”

However, several users focused on a different question - whether the slab shown in the video was actually dairy butter. Some claimed it looked more like a fat spread, with one user saying, “That's definitely not real butter.”

The same claim was echoed by others, including a user who wrote, “It's not butter but fat spread made from palm oil and it's legal.” Another comment described it as “a fat spread sold in the name of butter,” while another said, “That is not even dairy butter for sure.”

The debate over what exactly was being added to the kadhi chawal has added another layer to the viral food video, which has drawn attention primarily because of the sheer amount of fat seen going onto a single plate.- EndsPublished By: Raya GhoshPublished On: Sep 14, 2026 11:05 IST
