Student found dead at Assam homestay, boyfriend held, he claims she died by suicide

A 22-year-old Gauhati University student was found dead at a homestay in Guwahati’s Azara area, with the man detained in connection with the case claiming that she died by suicide. Police, however, said they would not accept his version without investigation.

Asif Ali, identified as the key accused in the case, told police that Nimisha Thakuria had hanged herself from a ceiling fan, Bolin Deori, a senior police officer from Guwahati, told the reporters.

“According to him (Asif), she hanged herself on the ceiling fan and died from self-harm,” Deori said.

The officer, however, said police were investigating all aspects of the case and would verify Asif’s account.

According to a report by India Today North East (NE), Nimisha was found unconscious at Rudra’s Kitchen homestay in the Garchuk-Dharapur area early Saturday morning. She was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

Nimisha was pursuing Sociology at Gauhati University and lived in Dharapur. Preliminary information suggests she had gone to the homestay with a male acquaintance and had reportedly been staying there since September 20, though police have not officially confirmed this detail.

Homestay staff said Nimisha and Asif occasionally visited the property. Police are examining her movements, the events leading up to her death and the role of the male acquaintance as part of the investigation.

Asif, who was in a relationship with Nimisha, was detained by police in connection with the case. His claim that she died by suicide has not been independently established.

The exact circumstances and cause of Nimisha’s death remain under investigation.- Ends
