Sudden downpour in Tirupati brings respite from heat

The incessant downpour for less than two hours on Monday afternoon (September 21, 2026) brought much-needed respite from the heat but also left parts of the city flooded, inundating low-lying areas until late evening.

The sudden rain also exposed the infrastructure bottlenecks in the old city area—such as the railway station, APSRTC central bus station, old municipal corporation office, Thathayagunta Gangamma temple, and Group Theatres—to name a few. Motorists and pedestrians were forced to wade through knee-deep water, as traffic came to a grinding halt.

Rather than the heavy downpour, locals alleged that the problem was the silt and garbage piled up in the stormwater drains, which led to the overflow of slushy water onto the roads.
