Tech leaders took opposing positions on regulating AI, pointing to a growing rift in the industry. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman — who last week called for not only US regulation, but also for a compact between Washington and Beijing — said his firm was collaborating with Anthropic and Google as they look to contain fears surrounding the technology.

However, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang sided with Meta’s chief in rejecting calls for coordinating an AI slowdown, saying there was no need for regulation on AI safety. Experts fear the window for regulation in the US is closing fast ahead of midterm elections, which risk interrupting the momentum sparked by a researcher’s warning that advanced AI is spiraling out of control.
