Tension at Central University of Karnataka following assault attempt on student; suspect arrested

Tension prevailed on the campus of the Central University of Karnataka (CUK) at Kadaganchi in Aland taluk late on Friday (September 11) night after a postgraduate student was allegedly subjected to sexual harassment and an attempted assault.
According to sources, the incident occurred late in the evening, when an MA History student was walking on the university premises. She was allegedly accosted and harassed by a worker engaged at an ongoing construction site on the campus. The victim immediately informed her classmates, who brought the matter to the attention of the on-duty campus security personnel.
The situation turned tense after student protesters alleged that the security supervisor failed to take action against the accused and instead attempted to shield him.
Condemning the incident and the security lapse, members of the Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), along with other students, staged a midnight demonstration near the university’s main entrance gate.
Demanding immediate criminal action against the worker and the suspension of the security supervisor, the protesters raised slogans against the university administration over lapses in student safety. The agitation continued until 2 a.m.
Upon receiving information, Kalaburagi Superintendent of Police Adduru Srinivasulu and personnel from the Narona Police Station inspected the spot. The police also took the suspect into custody and registered a case.
CUK Vice-Chancellor Battu Satyanarayana also visited the protest site to address the agitating students. He assured them of a thorough inquiry into both the alleged harassment and the security breach, appealing to the students to withdraw the demonstration.
