In a sweeping victory, the Democratic Party won majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the US midterm elections on Tuesday.

The results marked a remarkable political shift, with Democrats flipping several key states, most notably Texas, where James Talarico won his Senate race, marking the first Democratic statewide victory in 30 years.

Other notable states include North Carolina, South Carolina, Iowa, and Kansas.

The Senate races also saw a series of historic firsts, including Michigan electing its first Muslim senator, Abdul El-Sayed; New Hampshire electing its first openly gay senator, Chris Pappas; and Minnesota electing Peggy Flanagan as its first Native American woman senator.

The historic firsts extended to the gubernatorial races, where Democrats secured 28 governorships compared with 20 for Republicans. New Mexico elected its first Native American governor, Deb Haaland, while Texas elected Gina Hinojosa as its first Latina governor. Wisconsin also elected its first Black governor, David Crowley.

Abdul El-Sayed’s victory in Michigan was among the night's most widely discussed results. He defeated Republican candidate Mike Rogers following a highly contentious and closely watched race, during which Sayed faced Islamophobic and racist attacks.

Abdul El-Sayed outperformed Kamala, Biden, Hillary, and Slotkin in a swing state by running on Medicare for All and being framed as the anti-Israel candidate. There’s a lesson to be learned here!

People worldwide have joined the online celebrations, while others are now looking ahead to what the Democrats will do with their newly secured majorities.

Amid the celebrations, many have also used the results to remind voters that every vote counts.
