The Gautam Gambhir-Shreyas Iyer equation: Built on trust, clarity and a will to win

Shreyas Iyer knows Gautam Gambhir well. Well enough, in fact, to understand how his mind works.

The two have shared a dressing room in different capacities and at different stages of their careers. Now, with Gambhir India's head coach, Iyer believes that familiarity could prove valuable as they look to build a successful partnership once again.

Speaking about his equation with Gambhir ahead of the opening T20I against Afghanistan in New Delhi, Iyer highlighted the India coach's aggressive mindset, his relentless focus on winning and, perhaps most importantly, his ability to build trust within a team.

“I think he’s got a very aggressive mindset. He is someone who is always looking to win when he steps onto the field,” Iyer said at the pre-match press conference.

For Iyer, though, Gambhir's approach goes beyond simply demanding results. The former India opener, he said, has a strong understanding of individual players and gives them clarity about their roles.

“He builds a lot of trust and confidence within the team, and every player knows what their role is and has clarity about it,” Iyer added.

That player-management ability is something Iyer considers particularly important in a tournament environment, where coaches have to deal with players with different personalities, strengths and expectations.

“He has an amazing one-on-one player management approach. That is essential going forward in the tournament when you have that kind of relationship with every player, because all of us are different in our own ways and you need to understand each player,” Iyer said.

The comments offer an insight into a relationship that goes back several years and has evolved through different teams and roles.A RELATIONSHIP BUILT OVER THE YEARS

Iyer and Gambhir's first significant chapter together came at Delhi Daredevils in 2018, when Gambhir was the captain and Iyer was a young player finding his feet in the IPL.

It was Gambhir who took the unusual decision to step down as captain midway through the season and back Iyer as his successor.

“I feel that it’s time to step down, and I’ve announced Shreyas Iyer as the next captain. I think that is the way forward for the franchise,” Gambhir had said at the time.

It was more than a change in captaincy. It was a public show of faith in Iyer's leadership abilities at a relatively early stage of his career.

Iyer has since gone on to establish himself as a leader in the IPL, while his association with Gambhir continued at Kolkata Knight Riders.

Their roles were different by then. Gambhir had moved into a more prominent mentoring and coaching role, while Iyer was an established captain and senior player. That experience gave Iyer another opportunity to understand Gambhir's methods from a different perspective.

Iyer believes that having already worked with Gambhir can help both of them navigate the demands of the current environment.

“Both Gauti bhai and I, we have been in this scenario where we need to know the players, how they can deliver for the team,” he said.

There is also an understanding that such a relationship develops with time. The more they work together, the more they learn about each other's methods and expectations.

“The more matches we win, the more we will be getting to know each other closely,” Iyer said.

For Iyer, however, there is already a strong foundation. Having worked with Gambhir in the past, he believes he understands the thinking behind the aggression and intensity that the coach brings.

“I’ve worked with him in the past at KKR, so I definitely know how his mind works and how his approach is going to be.”

That familiarity could be significant as India navigate the demands of the T20I tournament. Gambhir knows Iyer's capabilities, while Iyer understands what his coach expects from the players around him.

It is a partnership that has already gone through several iterations: from captain and young player in Delhi, to coach and established leader at KKR, and now into a new chapter with India.
