THE World University Rankings 2027: IISc India's best at 254, no institute in top 200

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru has emerged as the highest-ranked Indian institute in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2027. IISc is ranked at the 254th position globally. India has 143 universities in the latest edition, 15 more than last year, making it the most represented country in Asia for the second consecutive year.

Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences followed IISc in the Indian list, securing a place in the 326–350 global rank band. Its strongest performance among the indicators listed by THE was in research environment, where it scored 98.0. It recorded scores of 62.1 for teaching and 58.6 for research quality. Saveetha had an overall score in the 52.3–53.3 range.

The comparison with 2026 shows that Saveetha has moved into the 326–350 band from 351–400, while KIIT has moved from 601–800 to 501–550. Shoolini remains within the 401–500/451–500 range, although THE has narrowed its 2027 band. Jamia Millia Islamia has moved from the 401–500 band to 501–550. IISc, meanwhile, has moved from the 201–250 band to an exact rank of 254.

The latest edition of THE rankings includes 2,297 universities across 118 countries and territories, making it the most extensive edition of the ranking so far, according to the report. India has added 15 institutions to its list of ranked universities, taking its total to 143.

Turkey is the second-most represented country, with 124 universities, also an increase of 15 institutions from the previous edition. More than 1,000 Asian universities are included in the 2027 rankings, up from 929 last year.

The 2027 rankings also highlight the growing presence of Asian universities at the top of the global table. Asia has overtaken continental Europe in the number of universities represented near the top, with China's Tsinghua University rising to 11th globally. Peking University is ranked 13th, while the National University of Singapore has entered the global top 15.

Globally, the University of Oxford has retained the number one position for the 11th consecutive year, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) at second. Princeton University and Stanford University share third place, while the University of Cambridge is fifth.
