These traits make Broncos WR Lil'Jordan Humphrey a Sean Payton favorite - Broncos Wire
Lil'Jordan Humphrey isn't flashy, but he's clearly one of coach Sean Payton's "guys."
The 28-year-old wide receiver is entering his fourth year with the Denver Broncos and seventh year with Payton. The only season he didn't play for Payton was 2022 when the coach stepped away from football for a season.
Going into the summer, many fans and pundits did not expect Humphrey to make the 53-man roster following the addition of Jaylen Waddle this spring. However, Payton opted to carry six receivers on the active roster, including LJH.
Humphrey is a skilled blocker and a team-first player, but those weren't the only reasons he made the squad. The 6-4, 225-pound receiver had a great summer after reporting to the team with better metrics than last season.
“It’s unusual for someone his age — we do all the metrics and they wear the chips, but his weight’s down," Payton said in August. "His movement on the field, acceleration, top-end speed is higher last season and now than it was when he was here earlier. They’re able to measure that with the Catapult. So he’s extremely smart, that’s probably one of his superpowers. He can play all three positions, and he’s a big target."
In addition to his improved metrics, Humphrey has the smarts, versatility and size that Payton looks for in a rotational receiver.
Courtland Sutton, Jaylen Waddle and Pat Bryant appear poised to serve as the club's top three receivers this fall with Troy Franklin and Marvin Mims also involved (Mims is technically listed as a starter on the depth chart). Humphrey probably won't have a big role on offense — he totaled nine catches for 101 yards and one score in nine games last fall — but he'll likely contribute on special teams.
And when the Broncos ask Humphrey to step in on offense, they know exactly what to expect from him. Humphrey is a Payton "guy" for a reason, and he earned his spot on the active roster this summer.
