Think it's your bank calling? Wendy Knowler says just hang up - EWN

Your phone rings. The caller knows who you bank with, has information about your account and may even show up on Truecaller as your bank's fraud department.

Consumer journalist Wendy Knowler told 702's Bongani Bingwa that fraudsters are becoming increasingly convincing.

And what's more, they're often using personal information obtained through data breaches to gain your trust.

So assuming it's an "inside job", isn't always accurate says Knowler.

"The first thing [people] say is, it was obviously an inside job because this person knew my bank account number, knew what some of my activity was, and they couldn't have known that if they weren't running from inside the bank. Well, firstly, that's a false assumption."

So, if somebody phones and says they're from your bank, don't believe them just because they know stuff about your account, she warned.
