This Indian hotel just made it to the world's top 50. It's over 100-years-old

The World's 50 Best Hotels 2026 list is out, bringing together some of the world's most talked-about luxury stays. And this time, an iconic Indian address has made it to the top 50.

Perched opposite the Gateway of India, The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai has long been one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks. Now, it has another reason to be in the spotlight as it secured the 30th spot in the global list. Last year it secured the 38th spot.

The ranking, which celebrates hotels across the globe, is decided by over 800 voters spread across 13 regions. The panel includes travel journalists, hoteliers, educators, business travellers and other experts.

Established by industrialist Jamsetji Tata, for Mumbai’s Taj, the recognition adds another chapter to a story that began in 1903. Over the decades, the heritage hotel has hosted royalty, dignitaries and a long list of high-profile guests, while becoming almost inseparable from Mumbai’s Colaba skyline. The 50 Best Hotels describes it as " a Mumbai icon" that has been "hailed for its grandeur, exemplary design and hospitality." The cost of staying at this regal hotel starts at approx. Rs 25,000. It may vary depending on the date and time of booking.

Much of its appeal lies in the way the hotel balances its storied past with the expectations of a modern luxury stay. Its grand corridors, period artwork and heritage details retain their old-world charm, while its dining spaces, wellness offerings and highly personalised service bring the experience into the present.

Earlier, the extended list, covering ranks 51 to 100, featured two Indian properties. Jaipur’s The Johri entered at No. 94, while The Oberoi Udaivilas, Udaipur also featured on the extended list.

Meanwhile, the top five on this year's list include Rosewood Hong Kong at No. 1, followed by Capella Bangkok at No.2, and Four Seasons Bangkok at Chao Phraya River at No. 3.
