Three arrested in Komani after alleged 120kg CAT haul and R2 000 bribe - IOL

Police in Komani, Eastern Cape seized drugs called the Methcathinone (CAT) weighing 120 kg with an estimated street cash value of more than R720 000 during the arrest of three suspects.

Three suspects, aged between 41 and 54, were arrested in Komani on Sunday night after police caught them with illicit drugs and an alleged R2,000 bribe. 

According to police spokesperson Captain Yolisa Mgolodela, Komani CPU B shift members and Komani CI members acted on a tip-off involving a champagne-coloured Toyota Fortuner with Eastern Cape registration plates travelling from Bridge Camp, Cofimvaba toward Komani.

Mgolodela said that the team intercepted the vehicle along the N6 near the Ultra City garage following a wait.

Reports indicate the vehicle contained three occupants—two males and a foreign national who was allegedly in the country in contravention of the Immigration Act.

“It is further alleged that upon the search, a drug, Methcathinone (CAT), weighing 120 kg with an estimated street cash value of more than R720,000 was found in their possession.

A R2000 cash that was used in an attempt to bribe the police officers was seized by the police in komani, Eastern Cape during the drug bust.

In an attempt to evade arrest, the suspects allegedly attempted to bribe a police official with an amount of R2000.00,” he said.

The alleged drugs, the R2 000 in cash and the Toyota Fortuner were seized.

The suspects were charged for dealing in drugs and bribing a police official. The third suspect was further charged for contravention of the Immigration Act.

They were detained to appear before Komani Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Chris Hani District Commissioner Major General Rudolph Adolph commended the joint team for their swift action and issued a stern warning to criminals operating in the region.
