Three dogs seized after alleged attack on officers in Cape Town’s Long Street - IOL

Two of the dogs seized by the Cape of Good Hope SPCA after allegedly being found tied up in Long Street, Cape Town.

A man has been arrested after allegedly setting a dog on City of Cape Town Law Enforcement officers in Long Street, while three dogs found living in filthy conditions in and around a vehicle have been seized.

The Cape of Good Hope SPCA said the incident happened on Friday evening when Law Enforcement officers responded to complaints about the man and his dogs in the Cape Town CBD.

According to the SPCA, officers found the man with three dogs at a vehicle parked in Long Street.

The organisation said one dog was tethered outside the vehicle while two were inside with the owner. The vehicle was described as extremely filthy, with a strong odour and inadequate space for the animals.

The SPCA said it was believed the man had been living permanently in the vehicle with the dogs.

While Law Enforcement officers were dealing with him, the man allegedly became obstructive and untied one of the dogs despite being instructed not to do so.

The SPCA said officers reported that he then set the dog on them.

He was arrested by Law Enforcement and the SPCA was called to deal with the animals.

Inspector Lwazi Ntungele assessed the dogs and seized all three, which were taken into the SPCA’s care.

A SPCA inspector raised concerns after he came across the conditions the dogs were living in.

The SPCA added criminal charges relating to animal cruelty.

The organisation said this was not its first encounter with the owner.

Inspectors had previously issued warnings over the welfare of his animals, but the SPCA said the man would leave the area with the dogs, making follow-up inspections difficult, before later returning.

The SPCA said previous warnings had failed to bring about a lasting improvement in the animals’ living conditions.

The suspect was arrested by Law Enforcement.

Criminal charges relating to animal cruelty have now been added in terms of the Animals Protection Act.

The man’s arrest and the investigation into his alleged conduct towards the Law Enforcement officers are being handled by the relevant authorities.

The three dogs remain in the care of the SPCA.
