Three suspected cash-in-transit robbers were killed and another arrested after a shootout with Gauteng police on the R80 highway on Monday.

Gauteng police shot and killed three suspected cash-in-transit robbers and arrested another following a deadly shootout on the R80 highway.

The shooting occurred on Monday, September 28.

Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said a multidisciplinary team was following up on intelligence that suspects were allegedly planning to carry out a robbery.

The team comprised members of the SAPS Tactical Response Team, Anti-Gang Unit, Gauteng Traffic Air Wing and private security companies through Business Against Crime South Africa.

Nevhuhulwi said the team spotted a white Hyundai H1 on the R80 highway and attempted to stop the vehicle using blue lights.

“The occupants allegedly opened fire on the police, who responded, resulting in three suspects being fatally wounded,” she said.

An AK-47 rifle and a 9mm pistol were recovered from the vehicle.

“One suspect believed to be working with the same team was travelling in a Toyota Avanza and was arrested and found in possession of a 9mm pistol,” Nevhuhulwi said.

She said forensic experts were processing the scene for further evidence.

“The recovered firearms will be subjected to ballistic testing to establish whether they can be linked to other crimes,” she said.

Meanwhile, Gauteng Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Policing Major General Fred Kekana applauded the multidisciplinary team for its continued efforts to disrupt cash-in-transit robberies and cross-pavement robberies in the province.
