Through the Lens: Nepal, one month after the floods - Nikkei Asia

BIDUR, Nepal -- Saturday marks one month since massive floods and landslides devastated parts of Nepal. More than 7,000 people have been killed or remain missing, according to the latest figures from the country's disaster authority, while damage and economic losses are estimated at about $2.7 billion.

Signs of exhaustion are increasingly visible among those who lost family members and homes. But, while many remain displaced and face an uncertain future, communities are slowly trying to reclaim a sense of normalcy. Memorial gatherings have been held to mourn the dead, while schools are gradually reopening and classes resuming in flood-hit communities.

Walking through the Devighat area of Bidur in central Nepal on the morning of Sept. 21, the stench was strong as sludge and sodden debris baked in the hot sun. The weather on Aug. 26, the day the Trishuli River flooded, was similarly clear.
